The use of the AMOEBA clustering/classification algorithm was investigated as a basis for both a color display generation technique and maximum likelihood proportion estimation procedure. An approach to analyzing large data reduction systems was formulated and an exploratory empirical study of spatial correlation in LANDSAT data was also carried out. Topics addressed include: (1) development of multiimage color images; (2) spectral spatial classification algorithm development; (3) spatial...

The author has identified the following significant results. The importance of photomap products derived from Skylab type imagery for portrayal of previously unmapped (or poorly mapped) areas is recognized as truly significant. Updating of maps of any scale from Skylab type imaging can only be accomplished on a selective basis. Relative positional accuracy commensurate with 1:100,000 scale (Sl90A) or even 1:50,000 (S190B) is considered correct. However, many features required on such maps...

The author has identified the following significant results. Experimentation with 70mm squares cut from ERTS-1 9.5 inch MSS positive transparencies in an I2S color additive viewer, a Richardson film production viewer at 10X magnification, and in a microfiche viewer at 12X and 18X magnification has indicated that band 5 photography provides the most useful interpretable data. In the I2S viewer high intensities of blue and red light in bands 4 and 6 respectively enhance faint vegetation patterns...

The use of remote sensors to determine the characteristics of the wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay and surrounding areas is discussed. The objectives of the program are stated as follows: (1) to use data and remote sensing techniques developed from studies of Rhode River, West River, and South River salt marshes to develop a wetland classification scheme useful in other regions of the Chesapeake Bay and to evaluate the classification system with respect to vegetation types, marsh physiography,...

The author has identified the following significant results. Significant results have been obtained in the identification of citrus, sugarcane, winter vegetables, irrigated pastures, and unimproved pastures which contain brush. Land without vegetation, lakes, roads, and waterways can also be determined. Different densities of vegetation covering some cultivated areas are apparent. The practical applications of these results are many. The abundance of host plants of pests can be determined....

An overview of the imaging techniques implemented by researchers in the microgravity combustion program shows that for almost any system, imaging of the flame may be accomplished in a variety of ways. Standard and intensified video, high speed, and infrared cameras and fluorescence, laser schlieren, rainbow schlieren, soot volume fraction, and soot temperature imaging have all been used in the laboratory and many in reduced gravity to make the necessary experimental measurements.

The activity concentrated on identifying crop and irrigation data sources for the eight states within the High Plains Aquifer and making contacts concerning the nature of these data. A mail questionnaire was developed to gather specific data not routinely reported through standard data collection channels. Input/output routines were designed for High Plains crop and irrigation data and initial statistical data on crops were input to computer files.

High altitude color and color infrared photography of the tri-county region of southeast Florida made it feasible to evaluate its potential for quantifying the dimensions of regional change. Attention was focused upon three main aspects of change in the region, which in fact overlap. These were; (1) the transformation of the southeast Florida wetlands; (2) the expansion of agriculture; and (3) the growth of the urbanized area. The development analyzed covered the period of thirteen years from...

Mapping was accomplished through the interpretation of high-altitude color infrared photography. The feasibility of utilizing LANDSAT digital data to augment the analysis was explored; complex patterns of wildlife habitat and confusion of spectral classes resulted in the decision to make limited use of LANDSAT data in the analysis. The final product is a map which delineates wildlife habitat at a scale of 1:24,000. The map is registered to and printed on a screened U.S.G.S. quadrangle base map....

The possible use of LANDSAT imagery and digital data for monitoring desertification indicators in Tunisia was studied. Field data were sampled in Tunisia for estimation of mapping accuracy in maps generated through interpretation of LANDSAT false color composites and processing of LANDSAT computer compatible tapes respectively. Temporal change studies were carried out through geometric registration of computer classified windows from 1972 to classified data from 1979. Indications on land...

A MODELING APPROACH IS PROPOSED FOR INVESTIGATING THE ACTIVITY OF MICROORGANISMS IN THE ORE FORMATION IN LAKES. THIS MODELING COVERS THE PROCESS OF OXIDATION AND CONCENTRATION OF MANGANESE AND IRON IN THE SILT BY REPRODUCTION UNDER LABORATORY CONDITIONS OF SECONDARY SILT DIAGENETIC PROFILES WITH THE MANGANESE AND IRON CONVERSION MICROZONES. THESE MODELS ARE USEFUL FOR VARIOUS STUDIES OF THE NORMAL GEOCHEMICAL ACTIVITY OF THE SILT MICROFLORA. REPRODUCTION OF THE TRANSITION FROM THE DEPOSITION OF...

A multistage sampling technique, with probability proportional to size, is developed for a forest volume inventory using remote sensing data. The LANDSAT data, Panchromatic aerial photographs, and field data are collected. Based on age and homogeneity, pine and eucalyptus classes are identified. Selection of tertiary sampling units is made through aerial photographs to minimize field work. The sampling errors for eucalyptus and pine ranged from 8.34 to 21.89 percent and from 7.18 to 8.60...

An alternative to the field survey method of acquiring hydrographic data is described. The technique involves the use of digitized color aerial photography in the derivation of the percentage of reflectance of shallow ocean bottom materials. These spectral reflectance values can then be used in an algorithm for calculating water depths. The reflectances that were derived in this study show a close relative comparison to ground truth information. After a discussion of the causes of discrepancies...

Airborne remote sensing techniques were applied to the detection and discrimination of pollution by oil on the ocean surface. The tests were performed in the Gulf of Mexico during April, 1970. Pollutants investigated included No. 2 fuel oil, No. 6 fuel oil, 9250 lube oil, light crude oil, heavy crude oil, gasoline, and mixtures of gasoline and oil. A total of 103 oil slicks were produced as a function of spill rate and ship speed. Ship speeds were nominally 10, 14, and 17 knots and spill rates...

Amorphous tin selenide thin films which possess Ovonic switching properties were fabricated using vacuum deposition techniques. Results obtained indicate that memory type Ovonic switching does occur in these films the energy density required for switching from a high impedance to a low impedance state is dependent on the spacing between the electrodes of the device. The switching is also function of the magnitude of the applied voltage pulse. A completely automated computer controlled testing...
